New and Collected Poems
by Virginia Bates
Ms. Bates' poems may best be bannered with her own words:
You who really need a psychic lift
Prefer no prick of conscience
May turn from the dark of life's penumbra
Like plants, lest they wither, towards the sun...
If the "you" applies, you are not the readers she intends and deserves. An admirable writer and an estimable book: it is for the warm- and light-hearted, but no for the faint-hearted.

Virgina Bates is my favorite type of poet - both an artist and an activist. Her poems combine these two elements, but also reflect a sensibility that does not take itself too seriously. What a lovely confluence - I am so glad to have discovered her writing!
