How Ari Became a Vegetarian
by Roberta Kalechofsky
Ari lives on a Moshav in the Negev Desert, an exciting place where a world famous migration of birds takes place-500 million birds of 200 different species-fly across each spring and autumn.
This desert is his "backyard." However watching these free birds leads Ari to a problem with his diet-and with understanding the adult world. He does not want to eat meat. He faces his first moral and social challenge when he discovers where meat comes from-but he does not wish to hurt his mother's feelings because she enjoys cooking for his family.
This conflict becomes the prism through which he comes to understand the adult world: That people who have differences can love each other even when they don't understand each other.
